Sciatica Q&A

Why Does Sciatica Happen?

Sciatica happens because of damage to the sciatic nerve. This nerve, the biggest in the whole body, begins in the lower part of the spinal column and moves down the whole leg, all the way to the heel. Since this nerve is so long, sciatica pain can happen anywhere in the entire bottom half of the body. The exact cause of the sciatic nerve damage leading to sciatica can vary, but common causes include weight gain, disc compression, and disc degeneration. No matter what the cause of sciatica, chiropractic care offers a gentle and non-invasive solution.

What Are the Symptoms of Sciatica?

The symptoms of sciatica include shooting pain down the leg, numbness in the buttocks or legs, and a "pins and needles" sensation in the heel. The shooting pain is by far the most common sign of sciatica, but that pain can be a little bit different for every person. For some people, the pain will only travel as far as their upper thighs. For others, the pain will shoot from the spine to the knee area. In the worst cases, the pain shoots straight down from the spine all the way to the heel. Sciatica pain is sporadic, but the frequency varies considerably person to person. Sciatica symptoms may come and go, but they won't resolve on their own. Chiropractic care is one of the most effective ways to deal with sciatica today.

How Does Chiropractic Care Help With Sciatica?

Sciatica pain often has its roots in spinal alignment issues. The chiropractor can guide the spine to the proper place, properly positioning the sciatic nerve as well. When the sciatic nerve is in a bad position due to things like disc compression, the nerve can be freed quickly in most cases. This often means that the pain relief can be almost immediate. There may also be other chiropractic care methods that are helpful for sciatica, including mirror image spinal remodeling and instrument assisted soft tissue manipulation.
