Rehabilitation Q&A

What is Rehabilitation in Chiropractic Care?

A chiropractic rehabilitation program is created to help patients heal after an injury, a severe illness, or a surgical procedure. It is common for people to start a chiropractic rehabilitation program after they are in an auto accident or some other type of traumatic accident. People who suffer from sports injuries also begin chiropractic rehabilitation programs to help them get back to full functionality. After a surgery, for example, hip surgery, patients may need rehab to help them build strength and learn how to use the hip and leg safely again.

What Does a Rehabilitation Program Include?

A chiropractic rehabilitation program can include several different types of care. Chiropractic adjustment is the cornerstone of the rehab program. Until the spine is properly aligned, it can be dangerous to exercise the injury. With a properly aligned spine, the patient can begin the process of building a stronger muscle support system. This includes specialized exercises, the use of tools like foam rollers, mirror image spinal remodeling, and instrument assisted soft tissue manipulation. Dr. Idrogo may also teach patients strengthening exercises that they can do at home on a daily basis. Therapeutic massage may also be very helpful in a chiropractic rehabilitation program, as it can help reduce swelling, alleviate inflammation, and dissipate old scar tissue around the muscles.

How Long Does a Chiropractic Rehabilitation Program Take?

This depends entirely on the individual patient and their specific injury or issue. At the first chiropractic appointment, Dr. Idrogo will evaluate the patient's injury and will discuss a treatment plan with them. Treatment plans generally last for at least several weeks, but every person is unique. Once the patient has reached a state of wellness -- ideally, the same level of wellness they had before the injury -- they can continue with periodic chiropractic adjustments to help them stay at peak health.
