How Chattanooga Chiropractor Dr Corey Idrogo can help your baby with Colic

Colic is a term that strikes dread into the hearts of parents everywhere. Approximately 10-20% of babies are affected by colic. Colic is characterized by tensed abdominal muscles, flexed legs, clenched fingers, and ear piercing screams. These symptoms leave babies inconsolable and miserable for hours or even days on end. The symptoms typically arise around three weeks of age and can last as long as six months. Despite the research done on colic, there is no known cause, which can make treating colic very difficult. Out of all treatments available, chiropractic care has given some of the best results, with 94% of colicky babies showing improvement with chiropractic adjustments. Chiropractic is gentle, conservative, safe, and extremely effective.

Research has shown remarkable benefits that trump other treatments such as dietary changes, medication, and infant positioning. A clinical trial published in 1999 in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics randomly put infants with colic into two groups. One group was given the anti-gas medication, called dimethicone, for two weeks and the other group received chiropractic care for two weeks. The study found that the babies receiving chiropractic adjustments showed a 67% decrease in crying while the crying in babies on the medication only decreased by 38%.

The parents of colicky babies are reported to have significantly higher levels of stress than parents with colic-free babies. The frustration from trying to soothe a colicky baby can leave parents feeling helpless and can interfere with mother-infant bonding and increase the risk of postpartum depression.

Chiropractic care can be very valuable in helping calm colic symptoms in infants. Chiropractic neither stimulates nor inhibits bodily function, rather, it gradually allows normal function of the body to take place properly once again. As chiropractic care helps to restore normal function into child’s nervous system, the infant’s digestive tract and other related organs function properly. The result is a happy and content baby.
